Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a United States federal holiday commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. It is observed on the second Monday of October. It falls on the same date as Canadian Thanksgiving (meaning both countries have a public holiday on the same day, even if the two holidays are different).

The holiday is increasingly controversial due to the catastrophic impact of European settlement on native populations. Consequently, several states do not recognize the holiday and others celebrate it as Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day.
