Learn how to participate in this community science project asking people to record the biodiversity of the borderlands. Find the Library's pop-up tent for help with iNaturalist or to see the specimens on loan from The Nat (The San Diego Natural History Museum)! Library staff will be on site from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. but anyone can take part in this project all month long!

This April, join the Next Generation Sonoran Desert Researchers (N-Gen), the Library, The Nat, and other collaborating organizations as we use the iNaturalist app to document the stunning biological diversity of the borderlands.

What is the Border BioBlitz? It’s an annual event that harnesses the power of the community to explore and document the diverse plants and animals found in our shared border region. This year we are focused on filling data gaps within five kilometers north and south of the Mexico-U.S. border from April 1-30.

Why join? This ongoing endeavor helps us learn more about our region's wild plants and animals and how they are changing over time.

How to take part:

  • Download the free iNaturalist app to your Android phone or iPhone
  • Join the Border BioBlitz 2023 iNaturalist project
  • During April, take photos of wild plants and animals within five kilometers (about three miles) north and south of the Mexico- U.S. border
  • Upload your photos to iNaturalist
  • Learn more as the iNaturalist community helps identify your observations
