Discover a new favorite spice or herb with Coronado Public Library! Each month, the library invites community members to explore different spices used in dishes around the world.
For the month of June we will be having a special guest weave us some tales around spices! You may use basil in pesto, but did you know that it was once considered useful in warding off dragons? Or that in an old tale a pot of basil was used to hide a deadly secret? And why would students in ancient Rome weave rosemary into their hair? And what is the cinnamologus bird which makes nests of cinnamon sticks? Storyteller Marilyn McPhie will share some lore about these and other spices and tell a few tales in which they play a starring role.
Marilyn McPhie is a professional storyteller who has told stories in the USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Portugal --- and in her living room on zoom. Her ancestors include people who made buttons, forks, umbrellas, ships, and – according to the courts in Salem, Massachusetts – spells. TEDx speaker, Board member, National Storytelling Network; president, Storytellers of San Diego. AND she has twenty-six grandchildren!
