The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 1 to November 3. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. This week, guitarist Ron Wheeler will perform popular acoustic tunes from the 60s through today.
Ron Wheeler is known locally as the front man of the band Ron's Garage. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri and was involved in choir at school starting in the first grade. He attended the University of Missouri Music Conservatory, studying vocal music. Inducted into the Navy in 1971, he moved to Lemoore, CA. In 1975, Wheeler moved to San Diego (still with the Navy) and spent his career at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado. He spent 23 years with the service, during which time he played in many bands on-board ships and at stations. He also had the opportunity to play around the world including in Barcelona, Tokyo, Subic Bay, Philippines; Alexandria, Egypt; and Nice, France.
Wheeler worked with a good friend, Ken Costa from 1984 to 1985 at a place called O'Hungry's in Old Town doing the college-crowd circuit. He met future bandmates Gonzo and Claudio at the Hotel del Coronado in 1991, when Wheeler returned from a three-year tour in Japan. They were playing with their group InVoices. Wheeler sat in occasionally and really felt comfortable with their musical style. In 1994 Wheeler was in a duo, "Hard Times," with a good friend, Paul Babiak. Gonzo asked Wheeler and Babiak to sub a couple of times in his group and they all started practicing in Ron’s garage. The vibe was good, the voices well suited for each other and Ron's Garage was born. Babiak left the group in 1997 and Claudio joined. They were the three amigos then, with Gary Taylor coming in later as the drummer. Their thrust is classic rock, with a blend of other musical styles thrown into the mix.
